Project Description

The project required the design and development of a vision system that could identify quality discrepancies throughout AVX’s automated process. As a supplier of automotive components, quality inspection is a critical factor in the process.

The overall process involves applying one or two layers of ceramic paste to a plastic substrate in what is effectively a continuous process. Each layer is precisely controlled for thickness and is dried before passing under a line scan camera. This is used to measure transmitted light as a means to identify voids in the ceramic layer. In the case of a single layer, the void will present as bright white pixels. When inspecting the second layer the vision system looks for a step change in grey scale between single and double layers. On detection of an abnormality, the system provides an output which is used to control subsequent process to ensure non-conforming material is rejected.
